Claiming Psoriasis as a Disability

Psoriasis is listed in the Social Security Administration's (SSA) impairment listing for Skin Disorders as a type of dermatitis. To be eligible for Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits, your medical reports must show extensive skin lesions persisting for at least three months despite treatment.

Your doctor must document specific details about your symptoms and how they impair your ability to perform substantial gainful activity. Some of the symptoms which prevent people from working include severe itching and skin infections, muscle aches, pustules, fever and depression. In addition, psoriatic arthritis can cause debilitating joint pain, swelling and stiffness.

Psoriasis is diagnosed by a physical examination of the skin. A biopsy may be necessary where the changes in the skin are not typical or characteristic. To rule out other types of arthritis when diagnosing psoriatic arthritis, your dermatologist may order a blood test. We will make sure you submit the appropriate test results and exam findings to the SSA.

Causes and Complications of Psoriasis

Doctors do not know what causes psoriasis, although current ideology includes nervous tension, infections, allergies, and dietary deficiencies or excesses. Genetics and family history may also play a role.

Complications from psoriasis may include compromised heart and kidneys, nail deformity and bone damage. Some people suffer depression or other mood disorders from the stress of living with a painful chronic illness. In addition, individuals may experience side effects from the medicine and treatments. Light therapy treatments, for example, have caused skin cancer in some patients.
