Major Depressive Disorder and Social Security Disability
One type of affective disorder that may enable you to obtain Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits is major depressive disorder. This type of disorder is characterized by a combination of at least four symptoms out of nine listed by the Social Security Administration (SSA), including, but not limited to, decreased energy, anxiety, thoughts of suicide, and sleep disturbance.
If you have been diagnosed with depression and are currently being treated and are unable to perform regular daily activities, you may be eligible for SSDI benefits. Seek out the qualified and dedicated staff and attorneys at Schwartzapfel Partners P.C. for help.
Major Depressive Disorder and Social Security Disability Qualifications
A doctor's determination that you have depression is not enough to qualify you for disability benefits. According to the SSA's Blue Book, you must also be able to show that your depression has resulted in at least two of the following:
- Marked restrictions in performing or enjoying daily life
- Marked difficulties in functioning socially
- Marked difficulty concentrating or maintaining pace
- Repeated and prolonged periods of exacerbated depressive symptoms that require a change or increase in treatment
