What Types of Diabetes Are Covered Under Social Security?

Beginning in June 2011, the Social Security Administration (SSA) will stop recognizing diabetes mellitus (the full medical term for diabetes) as a qualifying disability, unless the ailing individual is a child under the age of six. This is mainly due to the advances in medical care and advancements that have occurred over the past decades. However, more than 20 million Americans live with some form of diabetes, many of whom are unable to work due to medical complications raised by their diabetes. For individuals with complications, it is possible to seek and qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI).

Diabetes Mellitus Information and Qualifying Criteria

Type 1 diabetes (insulin-dependent or "juvenile" diabetes) is more likely to cause the serious medical conditions that qualify for disability benefits. However, Type 2 diabetes (adult onset diabetes) commonly goes undiagnosed for years, silently damaging other organs and systems.

There are three disabling conditions directly linked to diabetes mellitus that may qualify for you SSDI:

  • Neuropathy: Impaired function in two extremities (feet, legs or hands) resulting in inability to walk, extreme pain when standing, loss of sensation or severe coordination problems
  • Retinopathy: Severe visual impairment (loss of acuity or peripheral vision)
  • Acidosis: An average of one insulin deficiency emergency episode every two months (or six times in a year) resulting in diabetic shock or other medical trauma

From our New York law offices, we have also helped clients with diabetes qualify for SSDI under related medical conditions caused by severe diabetes such as kidney failure, hypertension (dangerously high blood pressure), heart failure and gangrene infections requiring amputation.

We know that prompt treatment of these conditions is critical, and that a diagnosis and record of ongoing diabetes treatment is crucial to winning an SSDI claim. We will help you take the right steps and fight for the benefits you need.
