Can I Claim Disability for Weight Loss Because of a Digestive Disorder?
Disorders of the digestive system commonly cause the person to lose weight due to decreased appetite, vomiting or diarrhea, or the body's inability to absorb nutrients from food. In a vicious cycle, the malnourishment can make the person weak and fatigued, further compromise the immune system and affect other body systems.
Have You Lost Weight Due to a Digestive Disorder? You May Be Eligible for Social Security Disability.
The Social Security Administration (SSA) recognizes weight loss due to any digestive disorder as an impairment eligible for disability insurance benefits (DIB). Claims for weight loss are evaluated against the body mass index, or BMI, a statistical measure based on your height, weight and gender. The "normal" range for BMI is 18.5 to 24.9.
To qualify for Social Security Disability (SSD) under this listing, you must be "underweight" (BMI of less than 17.5), as calculated on at least two evaluations at least 60 days apart during a six-month period. A BMI of less than 16.5 is considered "severely underweight."
The BMI score must be coupled with a qualifying diagnosis of a digestive disorder such as:
- Gastrointestinal hemorrhaging
- Inflammatory bowel disease, including Crohn's disease
- Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS or "spastic colon")
- Short bowel syndrome (after colon resection surgery)
- Esophageal stricture
- Pancreatic insufficiency
- Malabsorption
- Chronic liver disease
